New Delhi, October 7, 2025: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has immediately suspended lawyer Rakesh Kishore from practicing law after he attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai during a Supreme Court hearing on Tuesday morning.

According to an interim order issued by the BCI, Kishore, registered with the Delhi Bar Council, removed his shoe and attempted to hurl it at CJI Gavai while a case was being heard. Security personnel promptly apprehended him and escorted him out of the courtroom. The incident is believed to stem from a case involving a petition to restore a 7-foot ancient beheaded Vishnu idol at the Javari Temple in the Khajuraho monument complex, Madhya Pradesh. The CJI’s refusal to hear the plea and his remark advising the petitioner to “pray to God for relief” sparked controversy on social media, with some alleging it hurt Hindu sentiments.
