Karnataka Government Considers Paid Menstrual Leave for Women Employees!

The Karnataka government is planning to introduce a policy granting one day of paid menstrual leave per month to all women employees in both the government and private sectors.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is preparing to implement a policy providing one day of paid menstrual leave each month for women employees. The Labour Department has sought administrative approval for the 2025 Menstrual Leave Policy. Under this policy, women employed in government offices, garment industries, multinational companies, IT firms, and all private sector organizations in the state will be entitled to one day of paid leave per month.


The proposal is likely to receive approval in the upcoming cabinet meeting.Similar policies exist in other states. Kerala provides two days of menstrual leave for women ITI trainers, while Bihar and Odisha offer state government employees 12 days of menstrual leave annually. However, Karnataka will be the first state to implement such a policy covering both government and private sectors."This is a progressive bill. The policy will apply to all women employees, irrespective of whether they work in the government or private sector," said Labour Minister Santosh Lad in a statement to the media.
