An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that 27% of Bihar’s elected MLAs and 9% of MLAs nationwide come from political dynasties. Among these dynasts, a significant number are affiliated with regional parties like JD(U) and RJD.

Bihar: According to a recent report, approximately 25% of MLAs in the Bihar Legislative Assembly hail from political families, with family members already active in politics or holding prominent positions when these MLAs entered the political arena. The majority of these dynastic politicians belong to regional parties, namely Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), highlighting the deep influence of family-based politics in the state.


An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) reveals that 27% of Bihar’s elected MLAs and 9% of MLAs nationwide come from political dynasties. Among these dynasts, a significant number are affiliated with regional parties like JD(U) and RJD.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD): The RJD has a high number of MLAs from political families, particularly from Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family.

Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)]: Led by Nitish Kumar, this party also fields candidates from influential political families. Dynastic Politics in JD(U)Examples of dynastic politics in JD(U) include:Ashok Kumar Choudhary: Related to Maheshwar Hazari, with Hazari’s son, Divesh Chandra Hazari, serving as an MLA.

Children of Senior Leaders: Several children of former ministers and MLAs have contested and won legislative seats.

Undoubtedly, a quarter of Bihar’s MLAs come from political families, with this trend being particularly pronounced in regional parties like RJD and JD(U). These leaders leverage their political legacy and influence to promote family members to various elected positions, perpetuating dynastic politics in the state.
