Samudra Manthan and the Emergence of Lakshmi: According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Mahalakshmi emerged from the Kshira Sagara (Milky Ocean) during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). It is believed that she appeared on this Amavasya night. Deities and sages lit lamps to welcome and worship her on this dark night. Hence, there is a belief that worshipping Mahalakshmi on this day ensures her permanent presence in the household.

Deepavali is not merely a festival of lights but a symbol of wealth, prosperity, and wisdom. The Lakshmi Puja performed on the night of Amavasya (new moon) in the month of Kartika is the centerpiece of this festival.

Mythological Background: There are two primary reasons associated with performing Lakshmi Puja on Deepavali Amavasya:

  1. Samudra Manthan and the Emergence of Lakshmi: According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Mahalakshmi emerged from the Kshira Sagara (Milky Ocean) during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). It is believed that she appeared on this Amavasya night. Deities and sages lit lamps to welcome and worship her on this dark night. Lord Rama’s Return to Ayodhya: Another well-known legend states that this is the day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana after defeating Ravana and completing 14 years of exile. The people of Ayodhya, overjoyed by their king’s return, illuminated the entire city with lamps and performed Lakshmi Puja to celebrate. This symbolized the triumph of light (dharma) over darkness (adharma).

  1. Increase in Wealth and Prosperity: Goddess Lakshmi is the deity of wealth and abundance. Worshipping her on this day invokes her blessings, leading to an increase in wealth, grains, and overall prosperity in the household. Keeping homes and business premises clean, lighting lamps, and performing Lakshmi Puja on Deepavali Amavasya is believed to dispel daridrya (poverty and misfortune) and usher in happiness and peace.

  2. Good Fortune and Success: On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped alongside Lord Kubera. This puja is believed to remove obstacles in business and professional endeavors, paving the way for good fortune and success.
