Karnataka Farmers Intensify Stir Over Sugarcane Price; Home Minister Assures Action!?

Farmers in the state, who have launched a protest against the government for fixing the price of sugarcane, have intensified their continuous struggle, Satyagraha, and overnight sit-in protest over the last five days. On the other hand, the protest has also received support from BJP leaders.

Sugarcane growers in Karnataka have intensified their protests against the state government's pricing policy, demanding a fixed rate of ₹3,500 per tonne of cane. The agitation has grown over the last five days, with continuous protests, satyagrahas, and overnight sit-ins across major sugarcane-growing districts.

The government is reportedly scrambling to address the mounting anger among the sugarcane farming community.

Widespread Protests Across Districts -

Vijapura Agitation: Under the leadership of the State Farmers' Association and the Hasiru Sene (Green Brigade), a massive protest rally was organized in Vijayapura. Farmers marched from Gandhi Chowk to the Deputy Commissioner's office to submit their demands. They have also launched an 'Aho-Ratri Dharna Satyagraha' (overnight sit-in protest) at the location.

Belagavi Region: Protests have intensified in the Belagavi and Chikkodi areas, with local farmers calling for a 'Bandh' (shutdown) in the towns of Hukkeri and Athani.

Home Minister's Intervention -

Responding to the escalating situation, State Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara intervened and assured that steps would be taken to resolve the issue.

Dialogue with Sugar Minister: Parameshwara stated, "I have already spoken with the Sugar Minister, Shivanand Patil. I have instructed him to listen to the sugarcane growers' problems and resolve their issues on a priority basis." He assured that the government is making efforts to respond positively to the farmers' demands.

Political Support for the Agitation -

The farmers' fight has gained political momentum with support from the opposition.

BJP Leader Backs Farmers: Amid the government's attempts to calm the situation, BJP leader B. Y. Vijayendra reportedly challenged the state administration by throwing his support behind the farmers, standing firmly with the Annadatas (food providers).
