A 30-year-old man in the Howrah district of West Bengal has reportedly committed suicide after being severely distressed by a spelling error in his identity card. This incident occurred during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the voter list.
Details of the Incident
The deceased has been identified as Jahir Mal, a resident of Khalisani in Uluberia. His family informed the police that Jahir Mal was under severe stress after discovering a spelling error in his official documents.
He had visited several local offices over the past few weeks to correct the error but had been unsuccessful. Due to the ongoing SIR process, Jahir was reportedly afraid that this mistake in his document could create problems when verifying his citizenship or voter eligibility.
Political Repercussions
This incident has triggered a political conflict in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has blamed the BJP's "politics of fear" for this suicide and other recent deaths linked to anxieties over the SIR process.
TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee directed a minister to visit the deceased's family and assured them of support. The BJP has dismissed these accusations as political propaganda, asserting that SIR is merely a routine process for updating the voter list.
It is reported that while SIR is a standard process for updating the voter list, anxiety among citizens in West Bengal has increased due to its association with the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
