Based on information from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Afghanistan on Saturday (November 8, 2025).
Background Information:
Recently, another earthquake of magnitude 4.4 had also struck Afghanistan on Friday (November 6, 2025). That tremor occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are generally more dangerous than deep earthquakes because the seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, resulting in stronger ground shaking.
A powerful earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan on November 4 resulted in at least 27 fatalities and nearly 1,000 injuries.
Afghanistan is situated at the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Due to this location, it is a region frequently prone to earthquakes. Given the current conflict and lack of development, communities in Afghanistan have less resilience to cope with such natural disasters.
