Kamal Haasan's much-anticipated Marudhanayagam was grandly launched in 1996. The inauguration event at Madras Film City was attended by Queen Elizabeth and then-Chief Minister Karunanidhi. This massive pan-India film at the time featured actor Vishnuwardhan in a key role. However, after two years of shooting, the film was shelved due to financial problems.
The film required an estimated budget of around 50 crore rupees. At that time, with ticket prices only 10–20 rupees,
recovering the budget seemed impossible. As a Hollywood production house also backed out, the project came to a complete halt. Kamal Haasan had plans to cast Aishwarya Rai or Titanic actress Kate Winslet as the lead actress. For that, he spent even more on pre-production work.Arayna Women's Cotton Printed Floral Straight Kurta with Palazzo Pants and Dupatta
Despite immense efforts, Kamal couldn't complete the film. As a result, Marudhanayagam was considered a forgotten dream by everyone. But recently, in an interview, Kamal revealed that there's a possibility of the film coming back to life. Meanwhile, a scene from Mahesh Babu's Varanasi where he rides an ox has gone viral. Kamal Haasan had experimented with a similar scene in Marudhanayagam years ago. That old poster is also back in discussions now.
If Kamal Haasan revives this historic project, it will undoubtedly be big news for Indian cinema.
