'Sanchar Saathi' App Mandatory on All Mobiles: Major Government Directive

To prevent the misuse of IMEI numbers, the sale of counterfeit mobile devices, and cyber frauds conducted through telecom resources.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a new order mandating the pre-installation of the Central Government's 'Sanchar Saathi' mobile application on all mobile handsets manufactured or imported into India. This move is aimed at preventing cyber fraud and enhancing the safety of mobile users.

Key Highlights:

* Objective of the Order: To prevent the misuse of IMEI numbers, the sale of counterfeit mobile devices, and cyber frauds conducted through telecom resources.

* Mandatory Installation: All mobile manufacturers and importers selling devices in India must pre-install the 'Sanchar Saathi' app on their phones.

* Availability: The application must be clearly visible and easily accessible to the user during the initial phone setup or while in use. There is no provision to restrict or disable any of its features.

* Compliance Deadline: Companies have been given 90 days to comply with this new rule. The compliance report must be submitted within 120 days.

* Software Update: For phones already in the market or sales network, manufacturers must attempt to send this app through software updates.

What are the Benefits of the 'Sanchar Saathi' App?

The 'Sanchar Saathi' portal and app are citizen-centric initiatives that provide the following key services:

* Device Authenticity Check: Users can verify whether a mobile handset is counterfeit or genuine using its IMEI number.

* Reporting Stolen/Lost Phone: Helps in reporting a stolen or lost mobile phone and facilitates its blocking across telecom networks.

* Fraud Reporting: Users can report suspicious fraudulent calls or messages.

* Connections in Your Name: Users can check how many mobile connections (SIM cards) are registered under their name and report any unwanted or unknown connections.

This order has been issued under the Telecommunication Cyber Security Rules, 2024, and the government has warned that strict action will be taken against companies that violate it.
