Vijayapura: Renowned writer and thinker Dr. Rahmath Tarikere has emphasized that society faces serious risks when cultural education and social leadership are absent especially within political and academic spheres. He urged collective efforts to strengthen these values, which he described as essential for a healthy and progressive society.
Dr. Tarikere was speaking at a programme held on Sunday to mark National Education Day, organised jointly by the Vijayapura Citizens’ Forum and the Ammu Foundation. The event also included a felicitation ceremony for the recipients of the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Tarikere expressed concern over the growing lack of cultural awareness among today’s students and political leaders. “In the current social environment, the absence of cultural education is highly visible. Politicians and students without cultural grounding can become a danger to society,” he remarked. He stressed that alongside modern academic learning, cultural education and social leadership are urgently needed.
He noted that while modern education has contributed to professional stability and has helped students develop immense talent, it has simultaneously distanced them from the land, language, and cultural heritage they belong to. Reflecting on India’s early years after independence, he said the nation was fortunate to have been led by individuals with a strong sense of humanity and responsibility. “It is distressing that today we often speak lightly or disrespectfully of such leaders,” he added.
