POCSO Case: Supreme Court Stays Proceedings Against Former CM Yediyurappa

An FIR (First Information Report) was registered against Yediyurappa under the POCSO Act. Yediyurappa had filed a petition in the High Court seeking to quash this FIR.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the proceedings in the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) case filed against former Chief Minister of Karnataka and senior BJP leader, B.S. Yediyurappa. The Supreme Court delivered this important verdict after hearing a petition filed by Yediyurappa challenging an order passed by the Karnataka High Court.

Reason for the Stay and the High Court Order

An FIR (First Information Report) was registered against Yediyurappa under the POCSO Act. Yediyurappa had filed a petition in the High Court seeking to quash this FIR.The Karnataka High Court had rejected Yediyurappa's plea and ordered that the proceedings against him be continued and the investigation into the case be expedited. Yediyurappa filed an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's order. After hearing the petition, the Supreme Court issued a temporary stay on the High Court's order and postponed the hearing of the case.

The entire investigation and judicial process related to this case will now be temporarily halted. This decision by the Supreme Court has sparked another round of debate in state politics.

Background of the Case

An FIR was registered against Yediyurappa on March 14, 2024, under the POCSO Act and Section 354 A (Sexual Harassment) of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation into the case was being conducted by the CID (Criminal Investigation Department). The Supreme Court has adjourned the next hearing of this case to a specific date, and the stay order will remain in effect until then.
