Two young football players belonging to the two major conflict-ridden communities there, the Kuki and Meitei, have played a decisive role in leading the Indian football team to a historic 2-1 victory over Iran. With this win, the Indian team has qualified for the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 Finals (in Saudi Arabia).

In this match, held at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad, both of India's goals came from youths belonging to the conflict-affected communities of Manipur. The first goal (a penalty) was scored by the Kuki community player, Dallalmuon Gangte, leveling the score. Later, the winning goal was scored by the Meitei community player, Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam, confirming India's victory.

At a time when their home state is separated by buffer zones and checkpoints, and distrust is deeply rooted, these youngsters stood shoulder-to-shoulder wearing the colors of India.
