Chandigarh: A shocking incident in Punjab's Firozpur district has taken an unexpected turn. A 17-year-old girl, who was pushed into a canal with her hands tied by her own father about two months ago, has now been found alive. The girl, a school dropout and the eldest of four sisters, came forward to the media and shared the distressing account of her survival.
On September 29, the girl's father, Surjit Singh, suspected her character (nature), tied her hands tightly with ropes, and mercilessly pushed her into the canal. The father had also videotaped this cruel act, and the video subsequently went viral, sparking widespread outrage.Firozpur City Police acted swiftly following a complaint from the girl's cousin, registering a murder case and arresting Singh. He has been in the central jail ever since.
The Thrilling Story of Survival
The teenager, who reappeared after two months, emotionally disclosed how she survived:
She stated that the rushing water of the canal caused the ropes tied around her wrists to loosen. As she floated helplessly, her head struck an iron rod. The shock of that pain became her lifeline; she grabbed hold of the iron rod and somehow managed to reach the bank.Three passersby noticed her and took her to a safe place. Although she did not reveal where she took shelter for nearly two months, she mentioned that she had been suffering from an illness and was undergoing treatment.
Unexpected Plea from the Girl: "Release My Father"
The case took a major turn when the girl tearfully pleaded with the authorities for her father's release.
She cried, saying, "There is no one else to look after my younger sisters," and urged them to release her father.
She also accused her mother of being angry and provoking her drunken father during the time of the attack. Stating that she does not trust her relatives, the girl has sought police protection for her safety.
Since the girl has been found alive, the police are likely to modify the murder charge registered against Surjit Singh to a charge of attempt to murder. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
