Possibility of Treason Case Against Imran Khan; Shehbaz Sharif Government Warns of Strict Action

The government led by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a stern warning to the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, signaling that the possibility of filing treason cases against him cannot be ruled out.

The government led by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a stern warning to the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, signaling that the possibility of filing treason cases against him cannot be ruled out.

Rana Sanaullah, adviser to Sharif and former Interior Minister, warned Imran Khan and leaders of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party not to take this warning lightly, adding that failing to do so could lead to "serious consequences."

This government warning comes just days after the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military's communication wing, Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, criticized Imran Khan for creating and spreading an "anti-army" narrative. The military has stated that this narrative is "dangerous for national security."

Rana Sanaullah confirmed that the message given by ISPR has been "fully endorsed" by the Sharif government. Sanaullah has also alleged that Imran Khan's party is fueling national instability by spreading narratives used by terrorists. The government believes that Imran Khan's social media post from jail also has an "inflammatory" tone.

The animosity between the jailed Imran Khan and Army Chief Asim Munir has intensified. Khan has criticized Munir as a "mentally unstable" tyrant, and the article states that the constitutional amendments (27th Amendment) made to consolidate Munir's power have made Pakistan's political situation highly unstable. Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023 on charges of corruption and leaking state secrets.
