"The Time to Light the Lamp is Coming Soon": Justice G.R. Swaminathan’s Poignant Remarks

Addressing the gathering, Justice Swaminathan spoke in a lighter vein about his recurring association with lamps. "I do not know what my connection with the lamp is.

Madurai: "The day to light the lamp will certainly come," remarked Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. These poignant words, spoken just days after his controversial judicial order regarding the lighting of the 'Karthigai Deepam' at the Thiruparankundram hill, have sparked intense curiosity and discussion. The Justice was speaking on December 27 at the book launch of 'Kamban and Vaishnavam', a work centered on the Ramayana as translated by the 12th-century Tamil poet Kamban.

Lighthearted Remarks on a 'Connection with Lamps'

Addressing the gathering, Justice Swaminathan spoke in a lighter vein about his recurring association with lamps. "I do not know what my connection with the lamp is. I came here today happily to light the ceremonial lamp, but I was told, 'Sir, you should not light the lamp.' Though it was a bit disappointing, I firmly believe that the day to light the lamp will surely come," he said in Tamil.

Background of the Controversy

The remarks come in the wake of a heated legal and political battle. Justice Swaminathan had recently passed a judicial order allowing devotees to light the 'Karthigai Deepam' on a stone pillar located at the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple on the Thiruparankundram hill—a site that also houses a Dargah.

The ruling DMK government strongly opposed the order, citing concerns that it could disturb communal harmony. The issue escalated to the national level when opposition parties, including the DMK, signed a motion in Parliament seeking the impeachment of Justice Swaminathan. Expressing displeasure over the Tamil Nadu government's failure to implement his order, the Justice had initiated a contempt of court case, which is currently ongoing. Meanwhile, a division bench of the High Court has reserved its judgment on an appeal against his order.

"No Shame in Identity"

Describing himself as an "idealist," Justice Swaminathan praised two students who approached him for autographs with Vibhuti (sacred ash) on their foreheads. He opined that one should never feel shy or hesitant to wear symbols that represent their religious and cultural identity.

Ultimate Victory for Dharma

Drawing parallels from the Ramayana, the Justice remarked that in the struggle between Dharma (righteousness) and Adharma, righteousness often faces initial hardships. However, he emphasized that Dharma eventually triumphs, provided there is courage, discipline, and persistent effort.
