QR Code Scam Alert: Think Before You Scan! Essential Tips to Stay Safe from "Quishing"!

According to reports, apart from security systems, cyber fraudsters are increasingly targeting smartphone users by using fake domains, URLs, and browsers, as well as external QR codes, to carry out QR code scams.

While digital payments have made life easier, they have also opened the door for a new wave of cybercrime. Security experts are warning smartphone users about the rise of QR Code Scams, technically known as "Quishing" (QR Phishing). Unlike traditional email-based phishing, this method bypasses standard security filters by hiding malicious links within seemingly harmless images.

What is Quishing?

Quishing is a social engineering attack where scammers use fraudulent QR codes to lead users to malicious websites. These codes are often embedded in fake posters, parking tickets, flyers, or stickers pasted over legitimate merchant codes in public places.

According to recent reports, these scams are designed to bypass traditional email filters, primarily targeting the security vulnerabilities of mobile devices. Once a user scans a malicious code, they are redirected to a fraudulent page designed to steal sensitive data, including bank details, login credentials, and personal information. Red Flags: How to Spot a Fake QR Code ?

Scammers use various "traps" to catch unsuspecting users. Watch out for these signs:

Tampering Signs: Look for stickers or overlays placed on top of original QR codes at shops or kiosks.

Urgent Messages: Be wary of codes that come with "urgent" instructions like "Scan now to avoid a penalty" or "Claim your reward immediately."

Odd Placement: Be cautious of QR codes found on lamp posts, random walls, or unsolicited emails.

Suspicious URLs: Always preview the link before clicking. Look for misspellings

Immediate Steps if You are Scammed

If you have accidentally scanned a suspicious code and shared details:

Contact Your Bank: Freeze your accounts or block cards immediately.

Change Credentials: Update your UPI PINs and banking passwords.
