The Efficiency Revolution: Smarter, Not Bigger

According to recent technical reports, the company trained its flagship DeepSeek-V3 model for less than $6 million, and its reasoning model, DeepSeek-R1, for a staggering $294,000. Key Technical Innovations

The report highlights two core technologies that drive this efficiency:

Multi-head Latent Attention (MLA): This mechanism significantly compresses the "memory" (KV cache) required during inference, allowing the model to process information much faster using less hardware power.

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE): Unlike "dense" models where the entire brain is active for every query, DeepSeek’s MoE architecture only activates a small subset of its parameters (roughly 37B out of 671B) for any given task. This drastically reduces the computing power needed.

Bypassing the "Chip War"

Perhaps most surprising is that DeepSeek achieved these results despite US sanctions. While companies like Meta and OpenAI scramble for Nvidia’s latest H100 chips, DeepSeek optimized its software to run effectively on older or restricted hardware, such as the Nvidia H800. This suggests that software innovation may be becoming more critical than sheer hardware quantity.

Market Impact and Future Outlook

The "DeepSeek Effect" has already rattled the stock markets, causing a temporary dip in Nvidia's valuation as investors question if the era of "limitless GPU demand" is slowing down.
