WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed deep dissatisfaction over India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia. Trump warned on Monday that if India does not immediately terminate its oil trade with Russia, the U.S. may impose heavy tariffs on Indian goods imported into America.
What Did Trump Say?
Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, "Prime Minister Modi is a very good man. But he knows I’m not happy with this (Russian oil purchases). It was important to keep me happy. They are still trading with Russia, and we could very quickly increase tariffs on Indian products if this continues."
Multiple Rounds of Talks Fail
Despite six rounds of negotiations between Indian and U.S. representatives regarding a trade agreement, no final decision has been reached. Previously, Trump had claimed that "India will stop buying oil from Russia; Modi has promised me." However, India has continued its oil imports from Russia, prioritizing its national energy security.
India's Firm Stance and Trump’s Ire
While several nations have yielded to America's 'Tax War,' India has refused to compromise on its core interests. Key points of contention include:
* Agriculture and Dairy: India has refused to open these sectors to American companies.
* The Tariff Blow: Irritated by India’s firm stance, Trump has already imposed a 25% tariff on certain Indian goods.
Venezuela Now Under U.S. Control!
Simultaneously, President Trump spoke about Venezuela, declaring, "Venezuela will remain under U.S. control; we will not hand it over to anyone else." This significant statement followed U.S. military strikes in Venezuela and the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro’s family. Speaking at the Mar-a-Lago club, Trump clarified that the U.S. government’s stance on Venezuela is now absolute.
Key Highlights:
* Deadline for India: A push for India to stop Russian oil purchases.
* Economic Threat: Warning of further tax hikes on Indian exports.
* Policy Conflict: Trump's frustration over India’s refusal to grant concessions in the agricultural sector.
