Tariff War: "PM Modi is Unhappy with Me" - Explosive Statement by US President Donald Trump

The issue of tariffs has sparked a storm in the trade relationship between India and the United States.

Washington: The issue of tariffs has sparked a storm in the trade relationship between India and the United States. US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unhappy with him regarding the heavy tariffs imposed by the US as a result of India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

Key Highlights of Trump's Statement:

* Reason for PM Modi's Displeasure: India has been purchasing large quantities of crude oil from Russia. In response, the US has imposed a total of 50% tariffs on Indian goods (which includes a specific 25% levy linked to the oil trade). Trump mentioned he is aware that PM Modi is not pleased with this decision.

* Allegations of Supporting Russia: Trump claimed that by purchasing discounted Russian oil amidst the Ukraine conflict, India is effectively strengthening Moscow’s economy, which remains a major concern for the US.

* Warning of Additional Tariffs: Trump warned that Washington could further increase tariffs on Indian goods if New Delhi does not address US concerns regarding Russian oil imports.

"He Knows it's Important to Make Me Happy"

Describing PM Modi as a "very good man," Trump remarked, "He knows I am not happy about this. He understands how important it is to make me happy," subtly highlighting the pressure being applied through trade policies.

India’s Clarification:

Meanwhile, New Delhi has dismissed Trump’s earlier claims that India had promised to stop purchasing Russian oil. The Indian government clarified that no such official talks or promises have taken place, emphasizing its commitment to energy security.

Envoy Vinay Kwatra’s Appeal:

According to information shared by US Senator Lindsey Graham, India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, met with Trump in December at 'India House' (the Ambassador's official residence in Washington). During this meeting, Kwatra reportedly requested a reduction in the tariffs imposed on India in connection with the Russian oil purchases. This development has created widespread curiosity about the future trajectory of economic and diplomatic ties between India and the US.
