These seats fell vacant following the demise of two veteran leaders: former minister H.Y. Meti (Bagalkot) and the nation's oldest MLA, Dr. Shamanuru Shivashankarappa (Davanagere South).

The by-elections, likely to be held in March or April 2026, are being viewed as a mid-term litmus test for the ruling Congress government, which has completed two and a half years in power.

Davanagere South: February 14 Deadline for Candidates

In the Davanagere South constituency, the race for the ticket is intensifying. Reports suggest that the final list of candidates for this seat will be released on February 14. While Congress is leaning towards continuing the legacy of the Shamanuru family, possibly fielding a grandson of the late leader, the BJP is strategizing to "bloom the lotus" in what has traditionally been a Congress fortress.

Bagalkot: A Strategic Tug-of-War

The Bagalkot constituency is witnessing a flurry of activity from both major parties. Following H.Y. Meti's passing, the Congress is looking to consolidate its base, while the BJP, led by state president B.Y. Vijayendra, is working on a booth-level strategy to reclaim the seat. Statements from various ministers regarding potential candidates have already started creating ripples in political circles.
