The Battle for Kannadiga Reservation: Industry Opposition vs. Government’s Resolve!

The issue of providing reservations for Kannadigas in private sector jobs has once again sparked a major controversy in Karnataka.

The issue of providing reservations for Kannadigas in private sector jobs has once again sparked a major controversy in Karnataka. Here are the key highlights of this ongoing conflict between the government and industry leaders:

1. Objection from Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has openly expressed her opposition to the government's decision. She stated, "I believe companies give preference to locals if they have the required skills. However, mandating such reservations is detrimental to businesses."

2. The Andhra Pradesh Example Sparks Debate

A social media discussion regarding the Andhra Pradesh government officially mandating 75% reservation for locals in private jobs has reignited the fire in Karnataka, leading to heated debates across platforms.

3. Why This Bill? (The Sarojini Mahishi Report)

The Dr. Sarojini Mahishi Committee, formed in 1984, had recommended job reservations for Kannadigas. Based on this, the state government has drafted a new bill. To provide 50% reservation in administrative posts and 75% reservation in Class C and D category jobs for locals.

4. What is the Government’s Next Move?

The bill was previously put on hold due to intense opposition from the industry. However, CM Siddaramaiah recently stated, "Minor modifications have been made to the bill, and it will soon be presented to the Cabinet for approval to take a pro-Kannada decision."

5. Outrage and Resistance from Kannadigas

Industrialists refusing to hire locals have faced severe criticism from the people of Karnataka. The public is questioning: "Why are companies that utilize the land and resources of Karnataka hesitating to provide jobs to Kannadigas?"
