If India stands tall today as one of the world's strongest democracies, the credit goes to the unparalleled efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. As we celebrate Republic Day every January 26th, it is our duty to remember the architect who shaped this federal structure.
The 'Bismarck of India' Who United the Nation
When India gained independence in 1947, the country was not just composed of British provinces. Instead, it was fragmented into more than 562 small and large princely states. Many believed that uniting these states was an impossible task.
Diplomatic Shrewdness: Patel employed the strategy of ‘Sama, Dana, Bheda, Danda’ (persuasion, compensation, differentiation, and force). Through love and negotiation, he convinced most of the kings to join the union.
Courageous Decisions: When complex challenges arose in places like Junagadh, Hyderabad, and Kashmir, Patel remained undaunted and successfully integrated them to make the Indian map whole.
The Mantra of Unity: His core philosophy was "Every Indian must first feel that he is an Indian."
The Inseparable Bond: Republic Day and Sardar Patel Republic Day symbolizes the implementation of our Constitution. However, for that Constitution to apply to the entire country, the nation first had to be 'one.'
Geographical Unity: Had Patel not united the country, we wouldn’t be seeing the diverse tableaux and cultural variety of different states on a single platform during the Republic Day parade.
Administrative Foundation: Known as the 'Father of Indian Civil Services' (IAS/IPS), Patel strengthened the country's administrative machinery. This paved the way for the smooth governance of Republic India.
Pillar of the Constitution: As the Chairman of the committees on Fundamental Rights and Minorities in the Constituent Assembly, his advice remains the lifeblood of our democracy.
"Every Indian should forget that he is a Rajput, a Sikh, or a Jat. He must remember that he is an Indian and he has every right in his country but with certain duties." — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
Every moment of the Republic Day we celebrate today is a result of Patel's foresight. Just as the 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat stands tall against the sky, Sardar Patel's name is permanently etched in the history of India's unity. Let us bow in respect to this great soul on this Republic Day.
