Political History of the Pawar Family: The Rise of 'Dada', Sharad Pawar’s Nephew

The political journey of the Pawar family began with Sharad Pawar. Having served as an eight-time MLA, a four-time Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and a Union Minister, he is the supreme leader of this clan.

In Maharashtra, 'Pawar' is not just a surname; it is a political force. While the NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) empire built by Sharad Pawar may currently show deep cracks, the roots of this family remain intricately intertwined.

1. The Pillar of the Family: Sharad Pawar

The political journey of the Pawar family began with Sharad Pawar. Having served as an eight-time MLA, a four-time Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and a Union Minister, he is the supreme leader of this clan.

2. Ajit Pawar: The Nephew of Sharad Pawar

Ajit Pawar is the son of Sharad Pawar's elder brother, Anant Rao Pawar. This makes Sharad Pawar his paternal uncle (Kaka). Starting his political career under the shadow of Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar played a pivotal role in organizing the party in the Pune and Baramati regions. He is affectionately called 'Ajit Dada' by his supporters.

3. Supriya Sule: The Daughter of Sharad Pawar

Supriya Sule is the only daughter of Sharad Pawar. Politically, she is Ajit Pawar’s cousin. Relationally, Ajit Pawar is an elder brother to Supriya Sule. While Supriya was active in Delhi’s national politics, Ajit managed the state politics of Maharashtra. However, differences emerged between the two when the issue of succession (political inheritance) surfaced.

4. The Next Generation Leaders:

Parth Pawar: The son of Ajit Pawar, who has also entered the political arena.

Rohit Pawar: The grandson of Sharad Pawar’s other brother, Appasaheb Pawar. He is currently aligned with the Sharad Pawar faction.

Inside the 'Pawar' Family Politics:

Dissatisfied with a perceived lack of independence and believing that Sharad Pawar was prioritizing Supriya Sule, Ajit Pawar split the party and joined the BJP-Shiv Sena government. This was not just a division of a political party, but the splitting of the once-united 'Pawar Family.'
