Chandigarh: Amid intense political maneuvering and high drama, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a resounding victory in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation mayoral elections. In a major setback for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), BJP leader Saurabh Joshi was elected as the new Mayor.
Election Result Details:
In the triangular contest held on Thursday (January 29, 2026), the BJP candidate maintained a clear lead for the post of Mayor:
Saurabh Joshi (BJP): 18 votes (Winner)
Yogesh Dhingra (AAP): 11 votes
Gurpreet Gabi (Congress): 07 votes
In addition to the Mayor’s post, the BJP consolidated its absolute control over the Corporation with the election of Jasmanpreet Singh as Senior Deputy Mayor.
Where Did the Aam Aadmi Party Lose Ground?
Despite AAP's significant presence in Chandigarh, the collapse of the alliance between the Congress and AAP proved to be a boon for the BJP.
Allegations of a "Secret Deal": AAP's Chandigarh in-charge, Jernail Singh, leveled serious allegations, stating, "The Congress party entered into a secret pact with the BJP for power-sharing."
Split in Votes: Unlike the previous year when Congress and AAP were united, they contested separately this time, leading to a split in opposition votes and clearing a smooth path for the BJP.
Strength of the Corporation:
In the Chandigarh Corporation, the BJP holds 18 seats (including the vote of the Member of Parliament), while AAP has 11 and Congress has 6 members. During the voting process, BJP members expressed their support for their candidates by a show of hands.
Despite the Aam Aadmi Party being in power in the state of Punjab, the BJP has successfully maintained its continuous hold over the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Analysts suggest this victory will have a significant impact on upcoming elections.
