Karnataka Mahila Congress Stages Massive Protest Against Renaming of MGNREGA

The protest, led by State Mahila Congress President and former MLA Sowmya Reddy, saw protestors shouting slogans against the Central Government.

Anekal: Members of the Karnataka State Mahila Congress held a massive protest today at Attibele, located on the state border, condemning the Central Government's move to rename and amend the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.

Outrage Under the Leadership of Sowmya Reddy

The protest, led by State Mahila Congress President and former MLA Sowmya Reddy, saw protestors shouting slogans against the Central Government. National Secretary of Mahila Congress, Safiya, along with hundreds of women activists, joined the demonstration to express their anger.

Unique Protest with Tools and Utensils

The protestors did not limit themselves to slogans; they drew attention through a unique demonstration by carrying shovels, hammers, and iron basins (pans) onto the streets. They lashed out at the Center, accusing it of "snatching the livelihoods of the poor."

The Reason Behind the Agitation

The Congress leaders alleged that the Central Government is planning to rename the historic 'Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme'—introduced during the UPA era—to 'VVG Gram'. They claimed this move is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi and a calculated attempt to undermine the original intent of the welfare scheme.

Key Highlights:

Location: Attibele, Anekal Taluk (Karnataka-Tamil Nadu Border).

Leadership: Sowmya Reddy (President, State Mahila Congress).

Key Participants: Safiya (National Secretary) and over 100 activists.

Demand: Immediate withdrawal of the renaming and proposed amendments to the MGNREGA scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, Sowmya Reddy warned, "Instead of focusing on renaming historic schemes, the Central Government should prioritize providing actual employment to the people."
