Union Budget 2026: A Historic ₹53.47 Lakh Cr Outlay Sparks Political War of Words in Karnataka!?

For the first time in Indian history, the budget size has breached the ₹50 lakh crore milestone, settling at ₹53.47 Lakh Crore. Despite the scale, the reaction from Karnataka’s leadership remains sharply divided.

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman concluded her record 9th budget presentation, Karnataka’s political arena has turned into a battlefield of opinions. While the ruling BJP and its allies hail the budget as the blueprint for "Viksit Bharat," the Congress-led state government has dismissed it as a "disappointing collection of hollow words."

The Historic Scale

For the first time in Indian history, the budget size has breached the ₹50 lakh crore milestone, settling at ₹53.47 Lakh Crore. Despite the scale, the reaction from Karnataka’s leadership remains sharply divided.

The Critics: "Visionless and Disappointing"

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah led the charge, labeling the budget a major letdown for the state.

"This is a visionless budget. While there is plenty of talk about 'Viksit Bharat,' there are no concrete schemes to translate those words into action on the ground," the CM stated.

Priyank Kharge (Minister for RDPR) echoed these sentiments, pointing out the lack of structural solutions.

"The budget is full of attractive slogans, but where is the roadmap to curb inflation, stop the rupee's devaluation, or generate mass employment?" he questioned.

M.B. Patil (Industries Minister) expressed skepticism regarding the newly announced rail projects: "The High-Speed Rail Corridor is a welcome announcement in theory, but it offers very little tangible benefit to the people of Karnataka."

The Supporters: "A Boon for Development"

Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy highlighted the increased tax share for the state.

"The 16th Finance Commission has recommended a 4.13% tax share for Karnataka, up from the 3.64% allocated by the 15th Commission. The Rail Corridor will be a 'Varadana' (boon) for the state's connectivity," he noted.

V. Somanna (MoS Railways) emphasized the technological leap: "The High-Speed Rail Corridor is designed to bridge the gap between human clusters, tech hubs, and manufacturing centers, strengthening India's overall connectivity."

B.Y. Vijayendra (BJP State President) lauded the inclusive nature of the speech: "PM Modi’s vision of inclusive growth is evident here. Every sector has been given due importance to meet the aspirations of the common man." Hulimavana Mara - Auto Biography of P Lankesh Perfect Paperback – 1 January 2023

Karnataka’s Tally: Hits and Misses

While the state received several niche projects, many long-standing demands remain in limbo.

What Karnataka Got:

High-Speed Rail Corridor: Connecting Bengaluru to major industrial hubs.

Marine Conservation: A dedicated project for Sea Turtle Nesting sites along the coast.

Agricultural Revitalisation: Special schemes for Sandalwood, Cocoa, and Coconut growers.

Adventure Tourism: Promotion of mountaineering and trekking in coastal regions.

What Remains Unresolved:

Major Irrigation: No special status or massive funding for the Krishna and Upper Bhadra projects.

Bengaluru & Kalyana Karnataka: Lack of a dedicated multi-thousand-crore development package.

Healthcare: The long-standing demand for an AIIMS in Raichur was once again overlooked.

Social Sector: No announcement regarding the hike in honorarium for ASHA workers.

The Bottom Line

Budget 2026 presents a paradox for Karnataka: it offers futuristic infrastructure and niche environmental projects but stops short of addressing the massive irrigation and regional developmental gaps that the state has been fighting for.
