In a landmark political move aimed at restoring peace in the ethnic strife-hit state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has paved the way for a new elected government in Manipur. Senior leader and former Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh is set to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister, ending nearly a year of direct central rule.

In a historic first, the party has also appointed Nemcha Kipgen, a prominent woman leader from the Kuki community, as the Deputy Chief Minister, signaling a major reconciliation effort between the state's warring ethnic groups.

The Return of Democracy

Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of then-CM N. Biren Singh amidst escalating ethnic violence. The Union Government had extended the central rule in August 2025, which was set to expire on February 13, 2026.

The decision to restore the assembly was finalized during a high-level BJP Legislature Party meeting held in New Delhi on February 3, 2026.

A Leader of 'Peace and Reconciliation'

The selection of Yumnam Khemchand Singh, a five-time MLA from the Singjamei constituency, is seen as a strategic choice by the BJP high command.

The 'Liberal' Face: Unlike the previous administration, Singh is viewed as a "moderate" and "liberal" leader within the Meitei community.

Current Political Landscape

The new government faces the monumental task of rehabilitating over 60,000 displaced persons and addressing the deep-seated mistrust between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
