NEW DELHI: Tensions between neighboring nations Pakistan and Afghanistan have reached a boiling point. Following a midnight airstrike by the Pakistan Army inside the Afghan border on February 21, the Taliban government has declared an "open war" against Pakistan.
Background of the Incident:
Airstrikes: Pakistan targeted suspected hideouts of the 'Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan' (TTP) along the Durand Line.
Retaliation: In response to Pakistan’s attack, Afghan forces launched heavy fire on Pakistani border security forces.
Casualties: According to Pakistan, at least 70 militants were killed, while Afghanistan claims over 130 of its fighters have died. Hundreds of civilians have also reportedly lost their lives in this conflict.
What is India’s Stance?
In this war-like situation, the move of a peace-loving nation like India has piqued global curiosity. India has historically maintained a positive and supportive stance toward Afghanistan.
Condemnation of the Attack: Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, condemned Pakistan’s actions. He stated that Pakistan is attacking Afghanistan to "divert attention from its own internal failures."
Support for Sovereignty: India has consistently supported the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan.
Opposition to Terrorism: India has criticized Pakistan’s policy of sponsoring terrorism on international platforms.
Rejection of Allegations: India has dismissed Pakistan's allegations that "Indian proxies" are operating from Afghan soil as "baseless."
Pakistan’s Warning:
Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, declared the commencement of war via a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter), stating, "Our patience has run out; an open war has now begun."
A Blow to the Taliban?
Meanwhile, reports indicating that the Taliban has shot down a Pakistani U.S.-made F-16 fighter jet have come as a massive shock to Pakistan.
