Bengaluru, Mar 6: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in his 17th budget, has announced a new method for taxing alcohol. From now on, the tax will be based on the alcohol content. The government plans to gradually increase tax rates based on ex-factory prices instead of a sudden hike. Through this phased approach, the Excise Department aims to collect ₹45,000 crore in revenue in the 2026-27 fiscal year.
By the end of February last year, the Excise Department had collected ₹36,492 crore, showing a 12.7% growth. This new strategy is expected to have a major impact on the state’s revenue.
