The value of the free fishing equipment kits provided to the state's fishermen has seen a massive hike this time.

Bengaluru: In the 2026-27 state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, themed "Empowerment for All, Unveiling Opportunities, Building a New Karnataka," special emphasis has been placed on the fisheries sector. Several new projects have been announced to boost both coastal and inland fisheries.

Fishermen's Kit Value Doubled!

The value of the free fishing equipment kits provided to the state's fishermen has seen a massive hike this time. The government has moved to reduce the financial burden on fishermen by increasing the kit's value from the previous ₹10,000 to ₹20,000.

Establishment of 'Center of Excellence' in Mangaluru

With a strong focus on modern technology, it has been decided to establish a new 'Center of Excellence' at the College of Fisheries in Mangaluru. This center will play a crucial role in promoting biotechnology, innovative fishing techniques, and sea farming (Mariculture).

Expansion of 'Matsyadarshinis' in Cities

The government is moving forward to expand the market for fishery products. New 'Matsyadarshini' centers will be established in major cities across the state, including Belagavi, Davanagere, Hubballi, and Chikkamagaluru. This will ensure consumers have access to fresh fish products.

State-of-the-art Fish Markets in Four Districts

To provide well-equipped trading spaces for fishermen, the budget announced the construction of new fish markets in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Bagalkot districts. Overall, this year's budget has brought new hope to the fishing communities of both coastal and North Karnataka.
