In a significant move, the Commission has decided to conduct the West Bengal elections in just two phases, compared to the eight phases held previously.

Bengaluru: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced the schedule for the highly anticipated assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. Alongside these, the schedule for two crucial by-elections in Karnataka has also been released, with the Model Code of Conduct coming into effect immediately.

The Election Schedule:

Commencement of Polling: April 9 (Phase 1)

Conclusion of Polling: April 29 (Final Phase)

Date of Results: May 4, 2026

In a significant move, the Commission has decided to conduct the West Bengal elections in just two phases, compared to the eight phases held previously. While the 2021 process took 30 days during the COVID-19 period, the ECI is prepared to complete the entire exercise within 20 days this time.

Karnataka By-Elections: Bagalkot and Davanagere South

Polling for the seats vacated by the demise of veteran state leaders H.Y. Meti (Bagalkot) and Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Davanagere South) will be held on April 9.

Davanagere South Battleground: There is a high probability that a member of Shamanur Shivashankarappa's family will secure the Congress ticket. However, some Muslim leaders are also vying for the candidacy. Meanwhile, the BJP is maintaining a united front, with workers ready to campaign for whoever is chosen as the candidate.

Bagalkot Battleground:

A direct face-off is expected between former MLA Veeranna Charantimath and the Meti family. While Charantimath’s name is almost finalized from the BJP, a competition has emerged within the Congress between H.Y. Meti’s son and daughter for the ticket.

A 'Battle of Prestige' in Five States

This election serves as an existential challenge for several national and regional parties:

Tamil Nadu: A fierce contest is expected between the DMK-Congress alliance and the AIADMK-BJP combine. The entry of actor Vijay’s TVK and V.K. Sasikala has added to the intrigue.

West Bengal: A triangular fight will unfold between Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, the BJP, and the Left Front.

Kerala & Assam: While Kerala sees a traditional clash between the LDF and UDF, the BJP is fighting to retain power in Assam.

What do the Pre-Poll Surveys Suggest?

According to a survey conducted by IANS:

Tamil Nadu: The ruling DMK is predicted to lose power, with the AIADMK alliance expected to clinch victory.

Bengalal & Assam: 'Didi' (TMC) is likely to return in West Bengal, and the BJP is favored to retain power in Assam.

Kerala: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is predicted to hold onto its seat of power once again.
