Hosur: With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, the political heat is rising daily. To prevent the illegal transport of cash, the Election Commission has intensified inspections at border areas. Today, election officials seized a whopping ₹2.34 crore in cash being transported without proper documentation at a check post on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border.
Operation at Jujuvadi Check Post
The massive amount of cash was discovered during a vehicle inspection by election officials at the Jujuvadi Check Post on the Tamil Nadu border. Upon intercepting and inspecting an ATM van entering Tamil Nadu from Karnataka, officials found crores of rupees inside.
Lapse in Documentation and Security
The vehicle belongs to 'Hitachi Cash Management Services,' an agency responsible for replenishing cash in ATMs. While the van was being used for its routine task, officials noted the following discrepancies:
There were no valid documents for the cash being transported.
The required security measures for transporting such a large amount of money were not in place.
Noting these lapses, the election officials immediately seized the ATM van along with the ₹2.34 crore in cash.
Officials on High Alert
Since the Model Code of Conduct is in effect, there is a restriction on carrying more than ₹50,000 in cash without valid documentation. Official letters from banks or concerned institutions are mandatory when transporting large sums of money. As the rules were violated in this case, officials have taken the cash into custody and initiated a further investigation.
