BCCI cancels IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony, not the Match: Here is the reason

The IPL 2026 opening match between RCB and SRH will take place as scheduled on March 28 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. However, the BCCI has decided to cancel the Opening Ceremony (entertainment program) this year.

The IPL 2026 opening match between RCB and SRH will take place as scheduled on March 28 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. However, the BCCI has decided to cancel the Opening Ceremony (entertainment program) this year.

Reasons for cancellation:

  • Tribute to Victims: In 2025, during RCB's maiden title victory celebrations in Bengaluru, a tragic stampede occurred, claiming 11 lives. To honor the deceased and show sensitivity toward their families, the BCCI opted for a subdued start without cultural performances.

  • Memorial Gesture: As a mark of respect, 11 seats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium will be kept permanently empty during the matches.

  • Grand Finale: While there is no opening event, a grand closing ceremony is planned for the final on May 31.
