In a significant move, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has officially resigned from his membership in the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC).

In a significant move, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has officially resigned from his membership in the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC). JD(U) MLC Sanjay Gandhi reached the Bihar Legislative Council on Monday and formally submitted Nitish Kumar’s resignation letter to the Secretary.

Cabinet Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary confirmed the development. This step comes after Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2026. As per the constitutional provision under the Prohibition of SimultaneousMembership Rules (1950), a person cannot hold membership in both Parliament and the state legislature simultaneously.

One must resign from the state seat within 14 days of election to Parliament. Today was the final day to comply with this rule. This development has intensified discussions about a leadership change in Bihar. There is growing speculation that Nitish Kumar may soon resign from the post of Chief Minister as well, potentially ending his nearly two-decade-long dominance (this was his 10th term as CM).

In a parallel development, BJP National President Nitin Nabin elected from Bankipur constituency as MLA is also expected to resign from the Bihar Legislative Assembly shortly, as he too has been elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Nitish Kumar had filed his nomination for Rajya Sabha earlier this month and won with support from 44 MLAs on March 16.
