HSRP Plates Not Mandatory for Now: Karnataka Transport Minister Gives Huge Relief to Motorists

Currently, a case related to this project has been filed in the court and is in the hearing stage. Since the legal proceedings are still ongoing in the court, we cannot make it compulsory for now.

Bengaluru: In a major relief to motorists in the state who were confused over the installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP), Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has shared excellent news. The minister made an important clarification stating that HSRP number plates are not compulsory for the time being. With this announcement, citizens who were gripped with anxiety over missing the deadline to get the new number plates can now breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Matter is in Court; No One Can Force You!

Speaking to the media regarding this issue, the Transport Minister clearly laid out the state government's stance:

Central Government's Law: The rule to implement HSRP number plates across states is originally a law brought in by the Central Government.

Pending in Court: Currently, a case related to this project has been filed in the court and is in the hearing stage. Since the legal proceedings are still ongoing in the court, we cannot make it compulsory for now.

No Forcible Enforcement: Because the matter is still sub-judice, the minister explicitly mentioned that no authority can forcefully demand or compel the public to install HSRP number plates.

Order Not Canceled, But Not Mandatory Either!

To prevent further confusion among the public, the minister added context to his statement. He explained, "We cannot withdraw this order on our own, and we have not canceled any orders either. Even though the order technically exists, we cannot put pressure on anyone until the final verdict from the court is out." A severe fear of hefty fines was looming over motorists who had not changed their number plates despite multiple deadline extensions. However, this definitive statement from the minister comes as a highly anticipated breather for vehicle owners.
