This feature is currently being rolled out in phases. Initially, the opportunity will be available to large business accounts and verified channels in selected countries.

BENGALURU: Are you using WhatsApp just for messaging? If so, here is some great news for you. Much like YouTube and Instagram, you can now earn lakhs of rupees through WhatsApp! Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced its long-awaited 'Channel Monetization' feature for its users.

How to Earn Money? The Paid Subscription Feature

A 'Subscription' model is now being introduced for WhatsApp Channels. Under this, channel creators can provide content in two ways:

1. Free Content: For regular followers.

2. Premium Content: For this, followers will have to pay a monthly subscription or a fixed fee.

Those who wish to access exclusive information, in-depth analysis, or premium videos will need to pay and subscribe. This will provide a direct source of income for content creators.

Who Will Benefit the Most?

This new feature from WhatsApp is set to be a boon for prominent figures in the digital world:

* Influencers: They can share exclusive content with their fans.

* News Organizations: Breaking updates can be provided to premium subscribers.

* Business Entities: They can sell special offers and professional tips to their customers.

Ads Coming to WhatsApp?

Yes, along with channel monetization, there is a possibility that Advertisements (Ads) will appear on WhatsApp for the first time. According to sources, the company plans to generate revenue by displaying small-scale ads in the Status or Updates section. This could also pave the way for additional earnings for creators.

What About Your Privacy?

The introduction of monetization features will not affect your private chats.

Personal messages and calls will remain End-to-End Encrypted as always.

* The monetization feature is strictly limited to Channels within the 'Updates' tab.

When Will It Be Available?

This feature is currently being rolled out in phases. Initially, the opportunity will be available to large business accounts and verified channels in selected countries. It is expected to be accessible to all creators by the end of 2026.

In short, WhatsApp, which was once just a messaging app, is now geared up to give direct competition to YouTube. If you have great content and a good follower base, your WhatsApp account could be the key to increasing your bank balance!
