Extortion Scandal: Vijayapura Cops Demand Euthanasia Citing PSI’s Corruption Pressure

Staff claimed they were ordered to extort anywhere between ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh from complainants just to register an FIR.

VIJAYAPURA: In a shocking development at the Adarsh Nagar Police Station in Vijayapura, police personnel have written a letter to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister seeking permission for "mass euthanasia." The staff claimed they are unable to bear the harassment and pressure to extort money exerted by their own Police Sub-Inspector (PSI).

Extortion for Transfer Funds?

Serious allegations have been leveled against PSI Sitaram Lamani by his subordinates. According to the letter, Lamani is allegedly trying to accumulate a large sum of money to secure a transfer to his preferred Tikota Police Station. To achieve this, he has been reportedly placing extreme pressure on his staff to collect funds through illegal means.

An Extortion Racket via 'Code Words'

The details of PSI Lamani’s alleged extortion methods are startling. The list of accusations made by the staff includes:

Collection Codes: A specific code, '5.0' (representing ₹50,000), was allegedly used for money collection.

FIR Rates: Staff claimed they were ordered to extort anywhere between ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh from complainants just to register an FIR.

Collusion with Illegal Trades: Pressure was allegedly exerted on personnel to collect "protection money" from bars, spas, cigarette and mava (tobacco) vendors, and even prostitution rackets.

Letter to Senior Authorities

Distressed personnel stated in their complaint to senior police officials and the government that the PSI's illegal activities have made it impossible for them to work with dignity in the eyes of the public. They expressed that dying would be better than enduring such professional and ethical harassment. The incident has sparked intense debate, highlighting a severe crisis within the department tasked with fighting corruption.
