Hailstorms and Heat Slashes Karnataka’s Mango Output, Leaving Farmers in Despair

Mango’s production this summer was optimistic and the yield was expected to go up by 20%, but the erratic climate patterns of hailstorms, unseasonal rains, extreme heat has declined the production by 50% instead. The major growing regions in Karnataka are sternly hampered and farmer’s outcry is devastating. North Karnataka’s Haveri, Kalaburagi and Yadgir are traditionally significant producers of Mango. Unfortunately, the hailstorm which accrued in February destroyed 90% of the Mango flowers. Dharwad and Belgaum grow Alphonso, which will be exported and they also cater to domestic markets. This season the production has fallen to 1 tonne from their normal 4 tonnes every year.  

Kolar & Ramanagara regions, are famous for Badami, Totapuri, and Mallika, are also besieged with reduced fruit size and pest attacks like hoppers and powdery mildew. The size of the fruits is smaller and the taste too is deuterated.

Prices are sky-racketing with Alphonso priced 1600 to 2000 Rs. Per dozen, Badami is 125 to 150 Rs per KG, Banganapalli is priced 140 to 160 Rs per KG and Raspuri and Mallika are sold at 100 to 150 Rs. Per KG.

Those prices are the costliest Mangos of the in the recent years, besides, Badami supply is very limited, Banganapalli has good demand and the supply is very slow and less in few places. Despite, more volume is expected from the late-blooming regions of Kolar and Chikkaballapur by May, experts warn that the overall 2026 output will remain one of the lowest in recent years.
