Islamabad: In a shocking incident that has shamed the global medical community, a government hospital in Taunsa, Punjab province, Pakistan, has become the epicenter of a massive health crisis. Gross negligence by doctors and staff at the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital has resulted in at least 331 children testing positive for HIV.
The Investigation: A Gruesome Reality
The horrifying scale of the outbreak came to light during health screenings conducted in Taunsa between November 2024 and October 2025.
Infection Count: A total of 331 children have been confirmed HIV positive.
Mothers Test Negative: Interestingly, in an investigation of 97 affected families, only four mothers were found to be HIV positive. This confirms that the virus was not transmitted from mother to child at birth but was spread through the hospital’s medical practices.
The Deadly Causes: How the Virus Spread
According to the investigation report, the tragedy is a direct result of unsafe and primitive medical practices followed at the hospital:
Syringe Reuse: Needles used on one patient were routinely reused on others.
Contaminated Vials: Staff practiced "double-dipping," where a single syringe was repeatedly dipped into multi-dose medicine vials, contaminating the entire bottle for subsequent use.
Lack of Hygiene: Hospital staff were found treating patients without wearing gloves or using sanitizers, further accelerating the spread of the virus.
Families in Mourning
The human cost of this negligence is devastating. Recently, 8-year-old Mohammad Amin passed away from HIV-related complications after suffering from constant fever and intense pain. His family, expressing deep anger, stated that no child should have to endure such agony. Local residents allege that at least two children continue to get infected daily at the facility due to these contaminated practices.
Administrative Failure and Apathy
While the former Medical Superintendent was suspended in March 2025 following the initial outcry, current officials continue to deny the allegations, claiming the facility is safe. However, media reports indicate that unsafe practices persist at the hospital even today.
Global Health Warning: The negligence of a single hospital is pushing an entire generation toward a death sentence. This situation in Pakistan serves as a grim wake-up call for the global healthcare system regarding the importance of basic sterilization and safety protocols.
