Under this Act, one-third (33%) of the seats in the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi will be reserved for women.

New Delhi: Today marks a historic milestone in the annals of Indian democracy. The long-awaited 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' (106th Constitutional Amendment Act) has officially come into force across the country as of today, April 16, 2026. The Central Government issued the official Gazette Notification early this morning, clearing the path for the realization of the women's reservation dream.

Key Highlights:

Official Implementation: The Act is effective from April 16, 2026.

Political Reservation: 33% seats reserved for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.

Historic Milestone: Legal recognition achieved after a prolonged 30-year wait.

Not Just a Law, But a Tool for Empowerment

Both Houses of Parliament passed this bill during a special session in 2023. The notification released today is more than just an administrative procedure; it is a momentous step toward providing 50% of the nation's population an equal share in high-level decision-making. With this, India joins the ranks of global nations prioritizing gender representation in governance.

What is the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam?

Under this Act, one-third (33%) of the seats in the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi will be reserved for women. This also includes internal reservations for women belonging to SC and ST categories.

Full Implementation Following Delimitation

While the Act has come into force today, its full benefits will be realized following the upcoming Delimitation process. The redistribution of constituencies scheduled after 2026 will bring the women's reservation into practical effect. According to experts, the 2029 General Elections will see the Indian Parliament hosting an unprecedented number of women representatives.

Celebration in the Political Sphere

Various women's organizations and political leaders have hailed the government's decision. "This is the resolve of a New India. Women will no longer remain just voters; they will lead the nation as policymakers," stated prominent leaders while welcoming the move.
