BENGALURU: The impact of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is not confined to the Parliament house in Delhi; it is set to redefine the political landscape of every state in India. Under the new 2026 amendments, the Central Government is seriously considering increasing the total number of assembly seats across the country from the current 4,123 to over 6,000.
Key Highlights:
Expansion of Assemblies: Creation of approximately 2,000 new assembly constituencies nationwide.
Era of Women Legislators: A mandatory 33% reservation for women in every state assembly.
Empowering Local Leadership: Direct entry for women leaders from the Panchayat level into the State Legislative Assemblies (Vidhan Sabhas).
The Numbers Game: Impact on States
Currently, the representation of women in various state assemblies across India averages less than 10%. However, under the new regulations, as the total number of seats increases, female representation is set to rise phenomenally.
Estimated Projections:
Total Seats Nationwide: 6,186 (Approx.)
Reserved Seats for Women: 2,062 (Approx.)
This surge will lead to a higher number of women ministers in state cabinets, accelerating the implementation of women-centric developmental projects.
What will Karnataka’s Landscape Look Like?
The current strength of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly is 224 seats. Following the delimitation process and the seat hike, this is likely to increase to approximately 320 to 330 seats.
According to this calculation, around 105 to 110 women MLAs will grace the halls of the Vidhana Soudha.
Considering that Karnataka currently has only 10-12 women MLAs, this represents a tenfold leap in representation.
From Village Level to the Vidhana Soudha
India already provides 50% reservation for women in the Panchayat Raj system. However, women who honed their leadership skills at the grassroots level often faced limited opportunities to enter the State Assemblies. Now, the 33% reservation has opened a massive gateway for these capable leaders to take on state-level leadership roles.
Shifting Priorities in State Politics
As the number of women in the assemblies grows, significant changes are expected in state budgets:
Rural Development: Greater emphasis on drinking water, sanitation, and the improvement of Anganwadis.
Support for Women in Agriculture: Exclusive privileges and benefits for women working in the agricultural sector.
Small Scale Industries: Massive financial support and backing for Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
The reservation for women in state assemblies is poised to further strengthen India's federal structure. State governments are expected to undergo a positive transformation, becoming more responsive to the everyday problems of the citizens.
