Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam: Political Empowerment for SC/ST Women – A New Era of Social Justice..!

The 2026 amendment is writing a new chapter of social justice in India’s political map. Women from marginalized communities are now set to become the architects of the nation’s future.

NEW DELHI: India's most significant democratic reform, the 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam,' upholds not just gender equality but also the core principles of social justice. The 2026 Constitutional Amendment ensures "Reservation within Reservation" (Horizontal Reservation) for women belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), laying a solid foundation for the political future of Dalit and Tribal women.

Key Highlights:

Quota within Quota: 33% of the total seats reserved for SC/ST categories are now exclusively reserved for women of the same categories.

Dalit-Tribal Voices in the House: Direct representation of women from marginalized communities in the Parliament and State Assemblies.

Technical Clarity: SC/ST women's reservation will be implemented parallel to the general women’s reservation.

How Will This 'Internal Reservation' Work?

Under the new constitutional provisions, reservation is not limited to the general category. To understand the impact, look at the following calculation:

In the current Lok Sabha, 84 seats are reserved for the SC category and 47 seats for the ST category. Following the 2026 Delimitation, the total number of reserved seats is expected to rise. Out of these total reserved seats, one-third (1/3) must be mandatorily allotted to women of those respective categories. As a result, women from the most grassroots levels of society, alongside those from the general category, will gain entry into the nation’s highest temple of democracy—the Parliament.

A Giant Leap Toward Social Equality

For decades, although SC/ST reservations existed in politics, they were largely dominated by men. Dalit and Tribal women often faced "double discrimination" based on both gender and caste. This amendment aims to eliminate such disparities, empowering them to make independent decisions at the highest levels of governance.

New Momentum for Tribal and Rural Development

When Tribal (ST) women are elected as MPs and MLAs, issues regarding forest and environmental conservation, tribal rights, and rural education will receive direct attention from the government. This will be a milestone in strengthening leadership at the grassroots level.

Expert Analysis: "This is the realization of the dream of the architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Democracy becomes truly meaningful only when women and the marginalized reach the corridors of power. The 2026 amendment has legally created this opportunity," say political analysts.

Challenges and Opportunities

To ensure the benefits of this reservation reach truly deserving candidates, political parties must nurture SC/ST women activists from the ground up. This will help in eradicating the "proxy leadership" (tokenism) system and foster genuine woman leadership. The 2026 amendment is writing a new chapter of social justice in India’s political map. Women from marginalized communities are now set to become the architects of the nation’s future.
