TEHRAN: Just as expectations grew for smooth global trade following the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, a war of words has reignited between Iran and the United States. Iran has issued a stern warning to President Donald Trump, stating, "If the US Navy continues its patrol around the Strait of Hormuz, we will shut down the strait entirely."
Iran Fumes Over Trump’s Statement
Following the ceasefire in Lebanon, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway, would be opened for commercial shipping. However, responding to this, US President Donald Trump clarified that the "US Naval blockade will remain in place until our dealings with Iran are completed." Trump’s "stubborn" stance has reportedly infuriated Tehran.
"No Ship Moves Without Our Permission"
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on 'X' (formerly Twitter), asserting that "any passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz must be conducted based on designated routes and with Iranian permission." He hinted that if the US continues its naval blockade, Iran will take the decision to close the strait once again.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz So Important?
The Strait of Hormuz is considered the most strategic chokepoint in the global oil market. Its significance includes:
Global Oil Supply: Approximately one-fifth (1/5th) of the world's total oil supply passes through this narrow waterway.
Price Surge: The route had been largely restricted for nearly two months due to the conflict, causing global crude oil prices to skyrocket.
Economic Impact: A total shutdown of this strait would have a devastating impact on the energy security of many nations, including India.
Hope vs. Anxiety
While Iran has currently declared the route open for commercial vessels, Trump’s rigid stance and Iran’s sharp retaliation have sparked fresh anxiety in the global oil market. If negotiations fail and the strait is closed again, a further hike in crude oil prices is inevitable.
