New Delhi Bilateral Summit: India Seeks Greater Market Access for Steel and Seafood as Trade Ministers Push to Reshape Economic Partnership

April 20, 2026, today, a major and a significant high-level bilateral meeting is taking place between India and South Korea in New Delhi. Union Minister of commerce, Piyush Goyal with South Korea’s Minister Yeo Han-koo, discussed refurbishing the existing free trade agreement between the two countries to boost economic ties.

"We discussed ways to resume and revamp the India-Korea CEPA (comprehensive economic partnership agreement) upgrade negotiations and explored opportunities for deeper cooperation in industrial cooperation, green energy and digital trade," Goyal expressed in a post on social media.


Despite two countries have finished discussion on CEPA, almost 10 rounds from 2010, upgradation was needed and today’s session is focusing on that.

India is been seeking the market access for steel, rice, and shrimp from South Korea, to enhance the exports for India. India is been criticizing South Korea’s firms for not buying Indian products for Korean market. South Korea is the significant consumer of sea-food and India can meet their requirements. India's exports to Korea slashed to 9.3 per cent to USD 5.81 billion in 2024-25 from USD 6.41 billion in 2023-24. Imports dipped marginally by 0.34 per cent to USD 21 billion in 2024-25.

Highlighting the trade deficit, the Minister Goel pleaded South Korea’s counterpart, Minister Yeo Han-koo to speed up the process and trading and business can be enhanced to a bigger level. The Hormuz Deadlock: Existential Warfare and the Failure of External Mediation

The final outcome will be announced from both the ministers, once the discussion is completed.
