Riyaz Fazil Qazi is running the "Universal Multipurpose Society" also connected with names like Fikar Foundation and Padhe Hum, Padhaye Hum in the Zingabai Takli area of northwest Nagpur. The NGO was established around 16 years before and apparently focuses on education and healthcare for poor children in slums like Mankapur.
The FIR was filed by 23-year-old girl who was the HR along with three more girls. The main allegations are sexual harassment in July 2024. Staff reported that he would often turn off CCTV cameras before indulging in physical advances or inappropriate contact, such as touching shoulders despite objections.
Employees were pressurised to adopt Islamic practices, including reciting specific prayers while observing fasts. Qazi also insisted on dress code which subscribes to Islam. Qazi had created the fake Instagram account to monitor the girls; he often abused the girls with derogatory terms like prostitutes and call-girls. Since, the case was of communal in nature and potential funding irregularities, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has launched a parallel probe. Police are now tracking the 16-year history of the NGO. They are contacting former female employees who quit over the years to confirm if they were also victims of similar harassment or coercion.
