Bengaluru: Actor and social activist Chetan Ahimsa has stirred yet another controversy. His recent remarks questioning the land allotted by the government for the memorial of the legendary Kannada icon, Dr. Rajkumar, have drawn heavy fire from fans. Consequently, a formal complaint has been lodged against the actor at the Basaveshwaranagar Police Station in Bengaluru.
What’s in Chetan’s Tweet?
Chetan questioned the allocation of 2.5 acres of land within the Kanteerava Studio premises in the heart of Bengaluru for Dr. Rajkumar’s memorial complex. In his tweet, he stated, "We respect Rajkumar as a great artist. However, how justifiable is it to grant 2.5 acres of land for a memorial complex?" He further criticized the government's move, saying, "Governments should not keep an eye on votes while allotting land. Instead, they should focus on long-term vision and public utility. In 21st-century India, where there is a massive struggle for land, making such decisions purely for bank-bank politics is not right."
A Social Media War Breaks Out
As soon as Chetan’s post went viral, Dr. Rajkumar’s fans launched a counter-offensive on social media. "Dr. Rajkumar’s contribution to the Kannada language, culture, and the film industry is immeasurable. You have no right to question the honor given to such a great soul," expressed many fans in anger.
Counter-Attack Using Gandhi Family Memorials!
Responding sharply to Chetan’s logic, some users pointed out, "Where was your 'land struggle' when dozens of acres were allotted in Delhi for the memorials of politicians like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi? Why didn't you question it then?"
Police Complaint and the Road Ahead
Accusing Chetan’s statement of disturbing social peace and hurting the sentiments of Kannadigas, fans have submitted a formal complaint to the police. This controversy has now transcended social media and sparked discussions in political circles as well. Dr. Rajkumar’s memorial is not just a structure; it is an emotional sanctuary for millions of Kannadigas. Chetan’s socio-economic questioning of such a landmark has now taken the form of a massive public debate.
