"We Haven't Requested an Election Delay": State Election Commission Clarifies Stance on GBA Polls

With this clarification from the SEC, the responsibility for conducting the elections now shifts to the State Government. While the Commission declares itself "battle-ready," the Government continues to cite "staff shortage" as a bottleneck.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Election Commission (SEC) has issued a crucial press release regarding the long-awaited Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections. Clarifying its position, the Commission stated, "We have not requested a postponement or additional time anywhere," effectively putting an end to rumors that the SEC was responsible for the delay.

Affidavit Filed in Supreme Court

The Commission recently filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court detailing its preparedness for the upcoming elections. The document provides a comprehensive report on all measures taken so far, asserting that all necessary preparations are complete and the SEC is fully equipped to conduct the voting process.

The Government's Argument

A significant point highlighted by the Election Commission in court is the State Government's stance. The SEC noted that the Chief Secretary has requested an extension of time, citing two primary logistical hurdles:

Reason 1: The ongoing national census operations.

Reason 2: The massive deployment of government staff for various academic examinations.

The Government argues that these factors would lead to a severe shortage of personnel, necessitating a temporary delay in the election schedule.

SEC Ready; Awaiting Funds

Despite the Government's concerns, the Election Commission maintained its clarity. "We have not requested a delay. From our end, all arrangements are in place," the SEC stated. It further revealed that a formal request has already been sent to the Government to release the necessary funds required to conduct the election process smoothly.

What Lies Ahead?

With this clarification from the SEC, the responsibility for conducting the elections now shifts to the State Government. While the Commission declares itself "battle-ready," the Government continues to cite "staff shortage" as a bottleneck. All eyes are now on the Supreme Court to see how it interprets the affidavit and what final directives it issues regarding the GBA polls.
