The divergence between Saudi and UAE leaders did not happen overnight.
Saudi Arabia has been dominant within OPEC, the cartel of leading oil producers, and has leveraged its vast production capacity to influence global prices.
A decade ago, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the UAE leader, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, were viewed as ideologically aligned partners. Both were ambitious, self-assured in their efforts to reshape the region. Arab Spring revolts was seen as the threat to their governing systems, both by Saudi and UAE.
They were together, when they waged war against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. They also moved jointly to isolate a Persian Gulf neighbour, Qatar, over accusations of supporting terrorism, which Qatar denied. And they synchronized closely against their common regional enemy, Iran.

The clash for oil and economy started when Saudi started becoming a tourist destination and the commercial hub, which once UAE’s Dubai used to be. The change was a gradual threat to UAE.
Saudi officials said in March last year, more than 600 companies had established regional bases in Riyadh.
