Motab Shaikh’s name was removed from the electoral roll by the SIR and local election officials. The justification provided was related to citizenship verification and residency status, a highly antagonistic issue in border-area constituencies like Farakka.

Shaikh challenged the deletion, moving in the High Court to the Supreme Court. In a momentous ruling delivered just 24 hours before the nomination deadline, the SC ordered the EC to restore his name immediately, citing a lack of due process in his removal. With the court order in hand, he filed his papers on the very last day, becoming the candidate to even appear on the ballot.

Even with administrative hurdles and a shortened campaign period, Shaikh fielding for Congress defeated his closest rival from the TMC by a margin of 8,000+ votes. Local observers said that the attempt to disqualify him created the sympathy wave. Voters in Farakka viewed the deletion as an attempt by the state machinery to silence a popular local leader. This win is significant for the Congress in Murshidabad district, traditionally a stronghold that has seen intense three-way battles between the TMC, BJP, and Congress-Left alliance.
