Around 10:30 PM, Chandranath was traveling to his home in Barasat in a Scorpio SUV. As the vehicle reached the Doharia area in Madhyamgram, a car with a fake number plate suddenly diverged and blocked the SUV's path, forcing the driver to slow down.
Spontaneously, two motorcycle-borne assailants, who had been tailing the SUV, pulled up alongside the co-passenger seat where Rath was sitting. The gunmen fired four rounds at point-blank range through the rolled-up window. Three bullets hit Rath in the chest and heart. The SUV's window was left with a massive bullet hole, and the driver also sustained injuries during the spray of gunfire.

Rath was a 41-year-old professional of the Indian Air Force who took voluntary retirement to venture into corporate sector before moving into politics. He had been with Suvendu Adhikari since his time in the TMC and followed him to the BJP in 2020. He was considered Adhikari’s assistant and handled sensitive organisational logistics and party issues.

Police are currently examining CCTV footage from the Madhyamgram-Barasat stretch to identify the motorcycles and the abandoned vehicle's origin.
